Breaking — April 2026Regulatory Update

The $25,000 PDT Barrier Is Gone — Small Accounts Can Now Day Trade Freely

The SEC eliminated the Pattern Day Trader rule in early 2026. The $25,000 minimum equity requirement that blocked small account holders from day trading in margin accounts no longer exists. Brokers now use real-time, risk-based margin controls instead — your intraday buying power scales with your account size, not a fixed threshold.

Old rule

$25,000 minimum to day trade

New rule

No minimum — risk-based controls

Day trades allowed

Unlimited, any account size

What this means for small account traders: You can now execute unlimited day trades in a margin account regardless of your balance. A $2,000 account gets proportional intraday buying power — typically 2x–4x equity — instead of being blocked entirely. The brokers below have all updated their platforms to reflect the new rules.

$0 Minimum

All top picks require no minimum deposit to open an account

Fractional Shares

Buy partial shares of any stock or ETF from as little as $1

No PDT Restriction

Day trade freely — the $25K barrier was removed in 2026

$0 Commissions

Zero per-trade fees on stocks and ETFs at all top-ranked brokers

What to Look for in a Small Account Broker

Zero Minimums & No Fees

Avoid any broker with monthly maintenance fees, inactivity fees, or minimum balance requirements. These eat into small accounts disproportionately.

Fractional Shares

Fractional shares let you invest in high-priced stocks like Amazon or Google with as little as $1. Essential for diversifying a small account.

Day Trading Access (Post-PDT)

With the PDT rule gone, look for brokers with real-time risk-based margin systems, good Level 2 data, and fast order execution for intraday trading.

SIPC Protection & Reliability

All top-ranked brokers are SIPC-insured up to $500,000. Stick to established, regulated brokers — especially important when starting with limited capital.
