Why Your ETF Broker Actually Matters

Since nearly every broker went to $0 ETF commissions in 2019, most investors assume all ETF platforms are equal. They're not. The real differentiators are expense ratio access, ETF screener quality, fractional share support, and selection depth — and the differences add up to thousands of dollars over a 30-year horizon.

Expense Ratio Access

The broker you choose determines what funds you can access. Only Fidelity carries 0.00% ER funds. At every other broker, the cheapest US equity ETF is 0.03%. On $500K, that's $150/year difference — $4,500 over 30 years before compounding.

ETF Screener Quality

A quality screener lets you find low-cost ETFs by asset class, factor, yield, or region in seconds. Schwab and Fidelity lead here. At a broker with poor screening, you might miss cheaper alternatives.

Fractional Share Support

Fractional shares let you invest exact dollar amounts regardless of ETF share price. This matters for small accounts and dollar-cost averaging. Not all brokers support it — Webull, for example, does not.

ETF Selection Depth

For international, thematic, or factor ETFs, some brokers carry 500 while IBKR carries 13,000+. If you need niche exposure — Vietnam ETF, MSCI World Momentum, European dividend — selection depth matters enormously.

Which ETF Broker is Right for You?

I want the absolute lowest cost ETF setup

→ Fidelity

FZROX (0.00%) + FZILX (0.00%) + FXNAX (0.025%) is the cheapest three-fund portfolio available anywhere. If you're staying at Fidelity for decades, no other broker can beat this on cost.

I want the best ETF screener to research funds

→ Schwab

Schwab ETF OneSource gives you the most powerful retail ETF screener — filter by expense ratio, factor, category, yield, and issuer. Plus access to 2,200+ ETFs commission-free.

I need international or emerging market ETFs

→ Interactive Brokers

IBKR's 13,000+ ETFs across 150 global markets is unmatched. If you need European single-country ETFs, Asian market exposure, or niche factor ETFs not available in the US, IBKR is the only real option.

I'm starting with a small amount and want simplicity

→ SoFi Invest

SoFi's fractional ETF shares from $1 and free automated portfolio make it the best starting point for new ETF investors. No minimum, no advisory fee, no decisions required.

I want to hold ETFs inside a Roth IRA

→ Fidelity or Schwab

Both Fidelity and Schwab support all IRA types with $0 minimums and full ETF access. Fidelity wins on fund cost; Schwab wins on robo-advisor and branch support. Either is an excellent Roth IRA platform.
