Our Methodology

How We Test &
Review Brokers

Every BrokerInsight rating is built on 200+ hours of hands-on research, real funded accounts, and a transparent 8-step methodology. Here's exactly how we do it.

Editorially Independent

Affiliate revenue never influences our ratings. We've given low scores to brokers who pay us commissions, and high scores to brokers with no affiliate relationship whatsoever.

Hands-On Tested

Every broker we review is tested with a real, funded account — not a demo. Our analysts trade with their own money so reviews reflect genuine user experience.

Regularly Updated

We re-test every broker quarterly, and immediately when a broker changes fees, platforms, or policies. Outdated information is actively harmful to traders.

Scoring Framework

6 Categories. 50+ Data Points. One Score.

Every broker is evaluated across six weighted categories. The weights reflect what matters most to a typical retail trader based on our user research.

Order entry workflow — speed and clarity
Portfolio and account management interface
Customization options (watchlists, layouts, alerts)

Step by Step

Our 8-Step Testing Process

Every broker review follows the same repeatable process — executed over four weeks by our research team before a single word is published.

01

Open a Real Account

Week 1

Every review starts by opening a genuine funded account — not a demo. We go through the full onboarding process as a real customer would, noting friction points, verification speed, and deposit experience.

Complete full KYC/AML verification process
Test minimum deposit requirements with real funds
Document onboarding clarity and time to funding
Note welcome communications and account setup guidance
02

Evaluate the Platform Interface

Week 1–2

We spend significant time navigating the web platform, desktop app (if available), and mobile app — evaluating design, performance, and workflow efficiency for both beginner and experienced traders.

Navigate all core sections: portfolio, watchlist, order entry
Test on multiple browsers and screen sizes
Evaluate mobile app on iOS and Android separately
Assess customization options and layout flexibility
03

Place Real Trades & Test Execution

Week 2

We execute actual trades — stocks, ETFs, and options where applicable — to evaluate order routing quality, fill speed, and the accuracy of price improvement disclosures in the broker's PFOF reports.

Place market, limit, and stop orders across asset classes
Measure execution speed and compare fills to NBBO
Test extended hours trading where supported
Evaluate order ticket UX and confirmation workflow
04

Audit All Fees & Hidden Costs

Week 2–3

We comb through every fee disclosure, statement, and regulatory filing to surface all costs — including those brokers don't advertise prominently. We calculate the total annual cost of a typical retail trading account.

Review official fee schedule and SEC/FINRA disclosures
Test ACH, wire, and debit card deposit/withdrawal fees
Calculate effective cost per trade including spread impact
Compare margin rates to industry benchmarks
05

Stress-Test Charting & Tools

Week 3

Our analysts use the charting platform intensively — running scans, drawing technical setups, backtesting strategies, and evaluating the options chain during live market hours to test real-world performance under load.

Test 20+ technical indicators for accuracy and rendering speed
Run stock screener with complex multi-condition filters
Evaluate options chain during high-volatility market sessions
Test paper trading / simulation mode where available
06

Contact Customer Support

Week 3–4

We contact each broker's support team anonymously via every available channel — live chat, phone, and email — with a mix of simple and complex questions, evaluating response time, accuracy, and professionalism.

Test live chat response time during market hours and after
Call phone support and measure hold time + agent quality
Submit email/ticket and measure first-response time
Ask escalated questions to test depth of support knowledge
07

Verify Regulatory Standing

Week 4

We verify every broker's regulatory registrations through official government databases and review their history of disciplinary actions, customer complaints, and investor protection coverage.

Confirm registration with SEC, FINRA, and relevant SROs
Check FINRA BrokerCheck for complaints and disciplinary history
Verify SIPC membership and coverage limits
Review FDIC insurance for cash holdings where applicable
08

Score, Publish & Re-Test Regularly

Ongoing

After scoring across all six categories, a senior analyst reviews the final rating before publication. Reviews are re-tested quarterly or immediately when a broker makes significant changes to fees, platforms, or policies.

Apply weighted scoring formula across all six categories
Senior editorial review before any score is published
Trigger immediate re-test on fee changes or major platform updates
Full quarterly re-test cycle for all actively reviewed brokers

200+ Hours Per Broker Review

Each full broker review takes our team approximately 200 hours spread across four weeks. This includes hands-on testing, fee auditing, regulatory research, and editorial review — before publishing a single rating.
