Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we get asked most — no fluff, no affiliate spin.

Fidelity is our top pick for beginners in 2026. It offers $0 commissions, no account minimum, award-winning 24/7 customer support, and one of the most comprehensive free education libraries in the industry. Robinhood is a close second for those who prefer a simpler mobile-first experience, but Fidelity wins on research tools, retirement accounts, and long-term value.

Most major brokers — including Fidelity, Schwab, Robinhood, Webull, and moomoo — now offer $0 commission on US stock and ETF trades. The real cost differences show up in options fees ($0.50–$0.65 per contract), margin rates (5.58% at Interactive Brokers vs 12%+ at Robinhood), and payment for order flow practices. Firstrade is the only major broker offering $0 options contracts.

Webull and Interactive Brokers are our top picks for day trading. Webull offers free Level 2 data, 50+ technical indicators, extended hours trading, and a paper trading simulator — all at zero cost. Interactive Brokers is better for high-volume professional traders who need the lowest margin rates, global market access, and direct market routing. Both require a $25,000 minimum to avoid the Pattern Day Trader (PDT) rule.

Fidelity and Vanguard are the gold standard for retirement accounts. Fidelity offers zero-expense-ratio index funds (FZROX, FZILX), 24/7 support, and a seamless IRA experience with no minimums. Vanguard is ideal for investors committed to the Bogle-head philosophy — its funds like VTSAX (0.04% ER) and VOO (0.03% ER) are among the cheapest investment vehicles ever created. Charles Schwab is also excellent, especially after integrating thinkorswim.

Yes, Robinhood is a legitimate, regulated broker. It is a FINRA member and SIPC-insured up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for cash claims). Your securities are held in your name and are protected even if Robinhood were to fail. That said, Robinhood has faced regulatory fines in the past for best-execution practices, and its customer service is slower than established brokers like Fidelity or Schwab. For most casual investors, it is a safe and reliable platform.

Most major brokers — including Fidelity, Schwab, Robinhood, Webull, and SoFi — have a $0 account minimum. You can start investing with as little as $1 through fractional shares. The practical minimum depends on what you want to buy: ETFs like VOO trade around $500/share, but fractional shares let you invest any dollar amount. For margin accounts, most brokers require $2,000 minimum.

Both are excellent full-service brokers with $0 commissions and outstanding customer service. Fidelity edges out Schwab on research tools (20+ providers vs Schwab's fewer), zero-expense-ratio index funds, and slightly better mobile app ratings. Schwab wins on branch network (400+ locations), banking integration, and the thinkorswim platform (inherited from TD Ameritrade) for active traders. If you already bank with Schwab or value in-person support, choose Schwab. Otherwise, Fidelity is our slight overall preference.

A traditional broker (like Fidelity or Schwab) lets you choose and manage your own investments — you decide what to buy and when. A robo-advisor (like Betterment or Wealthfront) automatically builds and manages a diversified portfolio for you based on your goals and risk tolerance, typically for a 0.25% annual fee. Robo-advisors are ideal for hands-off investors who want professional-quality diversification without making individual investment decisions. Many brokers now offer both options.
