2. thinkorswim (TD Ameritrade / Schwab)

Runner-Up · Best for options traders

4.4 / 5

thinkorswim is the only platform that comes close to competing with TradingView — but only for a specific audience. If you're trading US equities and options through TD Ameritrade or Charles Schwab, thinkorswim's built-in options analytics, probability of profit overlays, and ThinkScript language are genuinely excellent. For everyone else, it's overkill that requires a brokerage account to access.

Wins at

  • Professional-grade options analytics built in
  • Powerful ThinkScript for custom indicators
  • Paper trading mode included
  • Free with TD Ameritrade / Charles Schwab account

Limitations

  • Steep learning curve — interface is dense
  • US equities and derivatives only — no crypto or forex
  • Requires brokerage account to access
Bottom line: Use thinkorswim if you trade options at Schwab and need deep analytics. Use TradingView for everything else — including using it alongside a Schwab account for charting.

3. MetaTrader 5

Specialist · Best for forex algo traders

3.9 / 5

MetaTrader 5 is the industry standard for forex brokers — but that's more about inertia than quality. Its charting interface is noticeably dated compared to TradingView, and the community is fragmented. Where MetaTrader genuinely wins is automated trading: Expert Advisors (EAs) can execute trades directly through your broker, which TradingView can't match without webhooks. If you run automated forex strategies, MT5 is your platform. For manual charting, switch to TradingView.

Wins at

  • Industry standard for forex broker integration
  • Expert Advisors (EAs) for full automation
  • Strategy backtesting engine included
  • Huge marketplace of custom indicators and EAs

Limitations

  • Interface feels outdated vs modern platforms
  • Charting quality noticeably inferior to TradingView
  • Community is fragmented — no unified idea sharing

4. NinjaTrader

Specialist · Best for futures only

3.7 / 5

NinjaTrader is a serious platform built for serious futures traders. The DOM (depth of market) execution, tick-level backtesting, and C#-based NinjaScript scripting are unmatched for E-mini S&P, crude oil, and bond traders. The catch: it costs $1,099 for a lifetime license, has almost no use case outside futures, and has a steep learning curve that takes months to master. If futures is your focus, it's worth the investment. For everyone else, skip it.

Wins at

  • Best-in-class DOM (depth of market) execution
  • Advanced backtesting with tick-level replay
  • C#-based NinjaScript for custom strategies
  • Optimized for E-mini S&P, crude, and bonds

Limitations

  • Significant upfront cost for lifetime license
  • Almost exclusively futures — no stocks or crypto charting
  • Very steep learning curve

Which Platform Is Right for You?

Match your trading type to the best platform — no guessing.

Beginner, any market

→ TradingView

Easiest to start, free plan, huge community — no learning curve for basic use

Day trader (stocks)

→ TradingView

VWAP, RVOL watchlist, 5-min setup, community scripts — everything built in

Crypto / forex trader

→ TradingView

Best crypto and forex coverage — MetaTrader adds nothing for analysis here

Options trader (US)

→ thinkorswim

Options analytics, greeks, probability of profit — TOS wins this specific category

Forex algo trader

→ MetaTrader 5

EA execution and broker integration are unmatched — pair with TradingView for analysis

Futures trader (advanced)

→ NinjaTrader

DOM execution and tick-level backtesting are best-in-class — not for beginners

Final Verdict

For 90%+ of traders, TradingView is the answer. It covers every asset class, works in any browser without installing software, has the best chart quality of any platform tested, and offers a free plan that's genuinely useful — not crippled. The community of 50M+ traders sharing ideas and Pine Scripts is something no competitor has come close to building.

The three cases where another platform wins are narrow: deep options analytics (thinkorswim), automated forex execution (MetaTrader 5), and serious futures DOM trading (NinjaTrader). In all three cases, many traders still use TradingView for charting and the specialist tool for execution.
